Light of the day fades
M. Yusuf Abbasi
It is said elephants retire to die in peace and do not suffer like men
Light of the day fades
On every hill
And the forest is still
In a moment
A change of guard
At the mansions of night
Under the dark shadows
He pads along
On soft dust of years
And in his last majesty
Raises his mighty trunk
Blows his trumpet
In a farewell
To all the four sides
To the stars above
And to the earth below
Nay, a welcome clarion
In the realm of peace
Till he lays down
His black bulk
In a soft morass
Of forgetfulness
And in a sublime moment
He sinks
Into eternal silence.
Why man has to be a Buddha
To do the same?
