If Ever We Meet
M. Yusuf Abbasi

If ever we meet
I would ask you
What were your thoughts?
Was your heart empty?
Or full of desire
Red juicy summer raspberry
And lost
In dreams of youth and beauty
Were you making
A balance sheet of moments
And measuring
Your anxieties and fears
Hopes and happiness
In scale of Time?
Were you just brooding
To the dull zoom
Of speeding wheels
Spinning in endless circles
Only the speedometer
Showing milestones of the past
And you saw no faces of future
In your rear view mirror,
Was it a hangover
Of a hectic night?
You dozed off on the wheel
And sailed away
From one sleep
To another sleep.
Who can tell?
As the sun fell
Splinters of your image
Were scattered in broken glass
The earth was drenched
In your blood
And your body spread out
As a question mark
In the middle of the road
You did not go beyond
The questions in your heart.
