As I lay awake,
Dazed and still,
No relief from pain,
And no comfort,
From stings of thought,
I felt an eerie presence,
An invisible visitor,
And it came so soft,
As a footfall of time,
A dew drop on the grass,
As touch of a snowflake,
On a still lake,
As it rustled past,
A sound froze fast,
On the frosty pane,
And a throb in my heart,
That missed a beat,
Who is it?
In my own retreat,
And within me a voice spoke,
Fear not!
I am no stranger,
Long, long ago,
The tree of destiny,
In the heavens shook,
As the autumn storms raged,
And shed leaves of pale life,
Myriad crumpled papers,
Endless white coffins,
Borne by gusty winds,
Into the dim eternity.
Now I have come to see,
Those haunts of my youth,
Those dreams of love,
Which lit some moments,
Of my earthly night,
And still shine,
In new hearts,
And in new moons.
